5A great watch
By Brad
I bought this exact watch in 1998. I can see no differnce in the design on the one pictured. All the words on the face are the same as well. This watch keeps perfect time. You need to wind it if you don't wear it everday. It definately makes a statement if you wear it to work or wear it out and someone notices it. Although most people will think you have a cheap copy. An easy way to tell is if the second hand appears to smoothly sweep from second to second vs. holding on each second and the ticking to the next. I've bumped it into things plenty over the years and to my surpise the watch has never ended up with a mark on it. The crystal on the face is made extra tough to endure some punishment. I don't own any other watches without a ding or two (and I have my fair share of watches). Even the bezel has never been damaged in a bump. I'm looking at it now and I can see no wear of any kind - band included. This watch still impresses me after all these years and it looks as good as the day I bought it. It does need to be sent in for routine maintenence every X number of years. I send mine in every 5. There are several different types of oil used on the jewels inside. I read in the book that came with it that (if I remeber right) the little wheel in there that is turning. turns enough to travel around the earth in one year. Don't quote me on that one. Rolex was the first watch to summit Everest... that's good enough for me. I would buy this watch again in a second. But mine is working just fine. I'm sure I'll probably be passing it down the family line. I got mine without the date for a reason. If I don't wear it for a couple days it stops. Once I put it on and wind it - I only have to set the time and not the date. Nothing says class, style and understated elegance like a Rolex. ...not that I have any - but at least my watch does.

It's kind of funny. When I was a kid I had a fake Rolex that I used to go around and tell everyone was real. Now I have a real Rolex and I often times tell people it's fake. That curtails the "sour grapes" type comments. First I show it to them. Then I tell them how to spot a fake. Then I tell them it's a fake and you can just see the gears turning. "Was the second hand sweeping or ticking"?

5If you're only going to buy one Rolex your whole life, buy this model
By MoonX
This is the newer model of the Submariner and was released in 2012. I own the version that was made right before this model, from 1989 to 2010 (Model 14060, made in 2010.) I personally prefer the older version to this newer one for several reasons:
1. The new version is noticeably larger
2. It feels a little sportier/clunkier (to me, it would be harder to wear this as a multi-use watch for sport, casual, and business)
3. It's heavier. not just a little heavier either, it's weight is substantially more than the previous model
4. The band doesn't transition as cleanly into the lugs in my opinion
5. The bezel is now ceramic instead of aluminum, which is fine, however, the cost to replace a cracked ceramic bezel is probably close to $1,000, whereas the aluminum bezel only costs a couple hundred.

Now, of course this is a beautiful watch... these are just my own personal feelings about it. I bought my watch last year so I was able to hold them both side by side and compare. The jeweler happened to have one more brand new older version in the safe in the back, and thank God he brought it out to show me because I decided on that one right away after comparing them. The price difference was minimal so that wasn't an issue but the look and feel of the older version just felt more like a Rolex than the newer one.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with either version, they're both great watches, so it really just comes down to personal preference. There is no denying the movement in this newer version is probably a better movement simply because of all the new research Rolex has put into it including the new anti-magnetic hairspring.

*** IMPORTANT ***
I would NOT recommend buying the watch over the internet, not only because they are easy to fake, but because Rolex does not allow their watches to be sold over the internet and therefore you will not get a warranty with your watch, and Rolex will refuse to even touch the watch if it ever needs service.

5Rolex Submariner
By Cd Brown
My wife gave me this same watch except mine has a date window. I gave her the ladies except hers is in gold and not stainless steel. We paid $850 for my submariner and $2,200 for hers. This was 33 yrs ago. I get the watch cleaned and certain parts replaced about every 5 to 7 years. It will cost me about $750 for this period's cleaning. The original bracelet is still used. Both watches keep almost perfect time. About every month I sync with my cell phone. Never off more than 5 to 10 seconds. I am a Scuba diver and used for about 15 years. No longer dive for fear of loosing. I Take care of it so it will be on my grandsons arm when he is my age. Current price for this watch is about $9,500.
